Plea bargaining in America

In that case, an informant who was later shown to have lied implicated 27 people of felony drug distribution. All but 1 were African American. After one week in jail, Erma Faye Stewart was unable to post the $70,000 bail, and desperately needed to go home and take care of her kids, so she plead guilty in exchange for 10 years probation and $1800 in fines.
Three years later, she was destitute, evicted from her public housing because she was unable to pay rent, and ineligible for food stamps. She spent her nights outside the housing project, and in the morning went to her job as cook, which pays $5.25 an hour. She was really struggling to pay the $1000 she still owed.
I was upset by her interview, so decided to write to her and send $25. I thought I might post a link to the story here because I have been impressed by how many really good people belong to this community.
